Will Shortz: Puzzle Maker

When you ask a child what they would like to be when they grow up common response might include firefighter, doctor, athlete or pilot but these job don’t capture the attention of all students. Take Will for example, when he was at eight grade he had to write essay about what he want to do with his life. He wrote he want to become puzzle maker. That same year he sold his first puzzle to magazine. At the age of 16 he contributed many puzzles to magazines. In college he found out that there is no traditional way of study puzzle. There were no classes offered on puzzles. Luckily after becoming bored with economical lessons the university started a program that allowed students to suggest their unique fields of study. Will and his professors created new classes that explored all aspects of puzzle making. He study history and psychology of puzzles mostly on his own. He did well in college but after graduating he didn’t know how to work as a puzzle maker. After that he found a job in magazine as a puzzle editor. That job was so great for Will because he surrounded by professional puzzle makers. When he joined new magazine as puzzle editor, that magazine’s puzzles were so hard and only few readers could answer that questions. Will made fundamental changes so that many people could enjoy it.
