A Brief History of Chocolate
One of the most beloved foods in the world chocolate is not just a mode treat. Chocolate or rather cacao seed has been part of our culinary for thousands of years.
More than 2000 years ago in Central America the Mayan people began consuming a drink made from cacao seed. There was no sugar in that years in America so they use chili pepper and other spices. It was called Xocolatl means bitter water. They use that in important rituals like wedding parties or religious ceremonies. They believed Xocolatl will enhance their health and cure illnesses.
On his fourth voyage to America in 1502, the explorer Christophe Columbus landed in what today we call it Nicaragua. He was the first European to discover Cacao seeds being used as money. Later another explorer named Heando Cortez saw Cacao’s value. He brought Cacao seeds and equipment used to make in Spain. Spanish people change that bitter taste with sugar and other ingredients.
As popular as chocolate was in Spain it didn’t speared to other countries until hundred years later, that Spanish princes married a French king and made chocolate fashionable. By 17th century the chocolate drink speared widely in France. Later an ambitious Frenchman opened chocolate bar in London. Soon chocolate drinks were sold in London.
But the biggest development in mode chocolate happened by accident in 1828. Dutch chemist discovered a way for making powdered chocolate when he tried to extract oils from cacao seeds to make the drink smoother.
